Hunger and Addiction

I find no shame in admitting that I am currently reading the Twilight series. It’s all my brother’s fault. If he hadn’t suggested it to me, hadn’t brought the first one to my house then I might not have gotten sucked in…(for those of you who have read it, pun totally intended!) Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I was this addicted to a book. It’s worse than my addiction to chocolate so you know it’s bad! I simply cannot stop reading. The way Stephanie Meyer paints her characters is brilliant. I know that I am not giving anything away when I tell you that there is a vampire in the story and I know that idea just conjured up all of these stereotypical images for you. However, this is the most original take on that idea that I’ve ever read. It’s hauntingly beautiful. There is such feeling; you find yourself longing to be friends with some of these folks. The story has the feel of Romeo and Juliet of which I am a huge fan.
Reading this book brought back the days of high school when I’d steal away to read Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë(how I love that story) or Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. I was hungry for the words, the story, the connection I felt to the writing, the characters and the story. As I grow older, I feel as though I don’t always connect with books on that level. I don’t hunger for the stories the way I once did. I can put the book down, walk away and come back to it at any time. (Although that is definitely not the case right now.) Is it perhaps that the more demands on our time and the less time for reading means that there is no way we could have the same hunger or are is it that novels written nowadays for adults lack the ability to leave a reader on the edge of their seat? Or is it something more?
What is the last book you read that you could not put down?? Did you love escaping to read when you were growing up? Do you love it now?
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
I’ve loved to read ever since I can remember! and the last book I couldn’t put down was the last book in the Twilight series:) I love them!! I’ve read them several times already, and now that I think about it, I could start over again-it’s been a few months since the last time. I only saw the movie once, but I just thought it wasn’t even close to being as good as the book, but I know others that loved it (though I wonder if they read the book, I know my nephew really liked the movie, but he didn’t read the book….)
Which book are you on? I must tell you, that last one is great (it and the first book are probably my favorites of the bunch) Ok, I could ramble on about it forever,so I’ll just stop now and go hunt up that first book-
have fun reading and take care!
Trish
Hmmmmm the last book I couldn’t put down was Eat Pray Love. There was just something wonderful about her journey. Before that it was the Kite Runner. I would literally read that book at red lights. I was totally captivated and needed to know what was going to happen next. I red it in 2 days in Syracuse and left it for my aunt to read. Her daughter called me the day after I left and said, “Thanks for leaving that book for my mom, I went over to her house at 3pm today and she was in her pajamas and she said she couldn’t put it down long enough to shower and get dressed.” Yes, I LOVED losing myself in books as a child and still do. I liked series then…not so much now.
I have to go back and look at your last blog, somehow I think I missed Doodle’s b-day blog
Suaveness for Dummies 3rd Edition, I read the whole introduction, just couldn’t put it down I must say.
How shall I put this? umm…ever hear of a little book called HARRY POTTER?!
Yes that series – especially 6 I couldn’t put down.
BEST DARN THING EVER!
Trish – how are you? So awesome to see you here!! I’m with you…I’ve loved to read..forever. I am on book 2…it’s driving me wild!! It’s like I can’t read fast enough to find out what happens LOL….At first I didn’t want to see the movie because it’s never as good but now I want to….as I said I’m addicted to this whole series….I’ll let you know when I get to the end to see which books are my fav…right now I love it all!! I’m so glad you understand my addiction LOL
Claire – oh Eat Pray Love….I was the same way…that slipped my mind…good call. I loved her journey as well. I didn’t read The Kite Runner….I have it so I may have to read that after this series….I was laughing out loud at the story of your aunt…I get the same way it’s crazy….I wasn’t into series when I was younger but now I appear to be….I love reading…
BigJohn – “Suaveness”….until you mentioned it, I’d forgotten how suave you are….I totally forgot that you would have to get it from somewhere and those books are the magic trick…you are so suave (I cannot stop laughing)
Bridget – How could I forget….see 5 was my fav even though my favorite character..well…..loved that series…didn’t we stand on a line one night and laugh our asses off while waiting for a book?? LOL
Giirrrllllll! WHEN do you have time to read?? You put me to shame. It’s sad to say that I don’t read anywhere near as much as I used to; I blame it all on the computer. I have several books sitting here just staring at me …. waiting for me … every so often I hear a faint whimper from the corner …
Felicia!! First…so awesome to see you here and second you made me laugh out loud….I’m so obsessed I’ve been up nights reading when I should be sleeping and I’ve even taken the book with me to the bathroom LMAO!!!!! I love that you hear a whimper…read me…that made me howl!! You are a busy woman with a fab biz…that takes time…no worries I know you’ll get to those books
I read Twilight in one sitting, I believe. So that might be the last book I couldn’t put down. But, I don’t know if I should tell you this…. I think the books just got worse. However, I still couldn’t put them down. I just got mad that I was forced to read it.
I don’t know how she keeps people enthralled like that.
I tend to fall in love with every book I pick up including my own. I’m promiscuous that way. But I remember back in high school when I read The Truth About Unicorns by Bonnie Jones Reynolds I reach the ending, waited a minuted, and then started reading it all over again. I still love that book.
Haven’t read Twilight though.
Oh boy…. I read all the Twilight series in 12 days..(luckily it was before blogging
The first book is still my favorite but you have to read all 4 just because…
I’m a hopeless romantic and I just love their love story. You’ll be reminded of how it was the first time you fell in love with your honey. DH was happy every time he saw me reading the books. But I definitely got hooked!
I read Eat, Pray, Love in between just to keep me grounded.
After Twilight, I read Something Borrowed (cute)..
But so far, nothing compares to my obsession to Twilight. I’m scared to read her Midnight Sun because it might pull me back to my obsession.
Enjoy
