The Things Children Teach Us
Sometimes, hidden among the normal day to day routines, there are moments of unforgettable beauty. I had one of those moments with my three-year-old daughter yesterday.
Aimee, an artsy Mama whose blog, Artsyville, I love to read had made these incredibly creative tiles back in January. So, on Sunday as I strolled up and down the aisles of Home Depot with my little family, I grabbed a few $0.30 tiles of my own and planned a tile painting adventure.
Despite the fact that I did not have the inks that were initially suggested, my daughter and I cracked open the acrylics the next morning and began to play. These are the tiles we created.

The super colorful one is hers.
She is so proud of it; the other two we created together. As I placed the tiles out to dry, she asked to paint on paper towels. We both love the way the paint looks when we throw it on there.
“Can I sit on your lap for a second?” she asked in the middle of our paper towel session.
“Sure,” I responded, wondering what this was about.
Then she took her brush, dipped it in paint and said, “Here, hold the brush with me.”
I gently held onto part of her brush and she began to move the paint delicately back and forth.
“See,” she said, while guiding me along, “ this is how we paint a house.”
A moment later, she stood.
“Now you try it on your own.” So, I mimicked what she had just showed me.
“Good, great job! Keep going,” she said, “it’s going to be a beautiful house.”

As she returned to her work, I sat for a few moments staring at her. I was in awe of the kindness, the patience and the skill she exhibited as she taught me her “house painting/ creating” skills.
So often we believe we need teach and teach and teach these little ones things but sometimes we need to be the students. Our children are filled with beauty and tremendous insight; sometimes all we need to do is listen closely to the magic they want to share.
